What is a Microsoft tenant
When purchasing Microsoft Products, a new Customer needs a Microsoft Tenant Domain. A Microsoft Tenant is the set of services assigned to your Organization. Typically, this Tenant is associated with one or more of your public DNS Domain names and acts as a central and isolated container for different Subscriptions and the Licenses within them that you assign to user accounts.
Microsoft tenant components
For SaaS cloud offerings: The Tenant represents the regional location that houses the servers providing cloud services.
For Azure PaaS services and virtual machines: Services hosted in Azure IaaS can have a tenancy in any Azure data center across the world. You specify the Azure datacenter, known as the location, when you create the Azure PaaS app or service or element of an IaaS workload.
Azure tenant considerations
Azure services can be deployed across multiple data centers globally. When creating Azure resources, you specify the location (Azure datacenter) where your services will be hosted. This flexibility allows you to choose the optimal geographic location for your workloads.
Azure Active Directory tenant
An Azure AD Tenant is a specific instance of Azure AD containing accounts and groups. Paid or trial Subscriptions of Microsoft 365 or Dynamics 365 include a free Azure AD Tenant. This Azure AD Tenant does not include other Azure services and is not the same as an Azure trial or paid Subscription.
Creating a new tenant domain
If a new Tenant Domain is needed, it can be created directly on the Platform. Please be aware of existing Microsoft restrictions for Domain creation. Ensure you comply with Microsoft's Domain naming conventions and validation requirements before creating a new Tenant Domain.
Summary
A Microsoft Tenant is a central container for services, Subscriptions, and Licenses assigned to your Organization, typically associated with your DNS Domain names. For SaaS offerings, the Tenant represents the regional server location, while Azure PaaS and IaaS services can be deployed in any Azure data center globally with location specified during creation. An Azure AD Tenant is a specific Azure AD instance containing accounts and groups, included free with Microsoft 365 or Dynamics 365 Subscriptions, but separate from other Azure services. New Tenant Domains can be created directly on the Platform, subject to Microsoft's Domain creation restrictions and naming conventions.
