Introduction

This article explains what Azure Consumption Promotions are, how the Platform supports them, and how to purchase them. It also shows how the purchased Subscription looks on the Platform and in Microsoft Partner Center after the purchase.

Azure Consumption Promotions are targeted, time-bound percentage-off discounts on eligible Azure consumption-based services offered by Microsoft through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program. They help Partners accelerate Customer adoption of Azure services by reducing the cost of entry, supporting migrations, driving consumption growth, and creating compelling sales opportunities.

What are Azure Consumption Promotions?

An Azure Consumption Promotion is a targeted, time-bound discount on eligible Azure consumption. It is acquired as a $0 purchase — it is not a discount applied to a Subscription like a license-based promotion. Once active, matching Azure usage charges are discounted automatically by Microsoft at the end of the Billing Period — no manual step is required from the Partner. The discount is reflected in usage reconciliation and invoicing.

These promotions span pay-as-you-go usage, Reserved Instances, and pre-purchase plans.

The lifecycle of an Azure Consumption Promotion follows these stages:

  • Discover – Browse available promotions in the Platform catalog.
  • Transact – Add the promotion to the cart and check out.
  • Manage – View the active promotion in the Subscription list (view-only).
  • Bill – The discount is reflected in usage reconciliation and invoice.
WARNING! Azure Consumption Promotions are different from license-based promotions. An acquired Azure Consumption Promotion cannot be transferred to another Subscription. Partners can view the promotions they acquire but cannot make any modifications to them. Auto-renewal is not supported. Promotions are subject to eligibility, terms, and conditions defined by Microsoft.

Key concepts

Redemption window – The dates during which a Partner can sign up a Customer for the promotion (for example, December 1–31). On the Platform, promotions are automatically published when their redemption window opens and unpublished when it closes.

Promotion duration – How long the discount applies after redemption:

  • For pay-as-you-go: A fixed period (for example, 3–12 months from the redemption date).
  • For Reserved Instances and pre-purchase plans: Automatically matches the Commitment Period (1-year or 3-year).

How the Platform supports Azure Consumption Promotions

The Platform provides end-to-end support for Azure Consumption Promotions — from discovery and purchase to invoicing.

Browse in the catalog

Azure Consumption Promotions show up directly in the Platform catalog and refresh automatically — by default, once a month. All synchronized promotions are published under a single Product called "Azure Promotions." Each Offer name includes the promotion description, and the full name appends the start date and end date (for example: "10% promotion on Azure App Service Basic Plan 6/30/2026 – 11/30/2026"). Promotions are automatically published when their redemption window opens and unpublished when it closes.

Priced and ready to sell

Every synced promotion is automatically priced in all Microsoft-supported currencies. No manual pricing setup is required.

NOTE! The price for Azure Consumption Promotions is 0. The actual promotional discount is applied by Microsoft on matching Azure consumption at the end of the Billing Period and is reflected in the reconciliation data.

Bought like any Subscription

Customers and Sellers purchase Azure Consumption Promotions through the standard cart and checkout flow, just like any other Subscription on the Platform. The Quantity is always 1.

Ready on the invoice

Once purchased, Azure Consumption Promotions flow correctly through Azure Plan invoicing from the first invoice in November 2026.

Prerequisites

Before you can purchase an Azure Consumption Promotion, make sure the following requirements are met:

  • Access to the Platform.
  • The Customer has an active Azure Plan.
  • The Customer has at least one active Azure Subscription under the Azure Plan.
  • At least one Resource Group exists under the Azure Subscription.
  • The Azure Promotions Product is available in the Customer Segment catalog. If it is not visible, the Seller Admin needs to add it. For more information, see How to add products in Catalog?

How to purchase an Azure Consumption Promotion

Navigate to the Customer's catalog and find the Offers under the Azure Promotions Product.

Select the desired Offer and complete the purchase through the standard cart and checkout flow. On the Subscription Form, you will need to select the Tenant domain, Azure Plan, Azure Subscription, Resource Group, Term Duration, and Billing Cycle. Subscription details on the Platform

After the Order is processed, the Azure Consumption Promotion appears in the Customer's Subscription list. The Subscription name includes the promotion name along with its start and end dates.

Select the Subscription name to open the details page. The Subscription Form displays:

  • Subscription ID and Vendor Subscription ID
  • Vendor (Microsoft)
  • Tenant domain
  • Azure Plan Subscription status
  • Azure Subscription
  • Resource Group
  • Term Duration (for example, 5 months)
  • Billing Cycle (One Time)
  • Quantity (1)

NOTE! Azure Consumption Promotions are view-only after purchase. No modifications (Quantity changes, cancellations, or transfers) can be made through the Platform or Microsoft Partner Center.

The purchased Azure Consumption Promotion is also visible in Microsoft Partner Center under the Customer's Subscriptions page, in the Benefits tab. This confirms that the promotion was successfully provisioned on the Microsoft side.

Invoicing

Once purchased, Azure Consumption Promotions flow correctly through Azure Plan invoicing from the first invoice in November 2026. The promotional discount is applied automatically by Microsoft on matching Azure usage charges at the end of the Billing Period and is reflected in the reconciliation data. No manual action is required from the Partner to apply the discount.
